Hollywood Vs. Indie

Yesterday I saw The Kids are All Right. It was interesting. The characters were quirky and unique. The performances were simple and honest. But the people didn't feel real. They were over the top. More granola, more hippie, more intellectual, than even I could take.
But this is the risk of Indie films that they bravely take. Hollywood characters are simple and archetypal but reliable. The damsel in distress. The tortured hero who reluctantly fights evil. They are simple. Predictable. But reliably soothing in some way. Clearly not real people, but a fan fantasy.
Whereas Indie movies try to make quirky real characters that are not bland and Hollywood. They swing for the bleachers so that they really connect with some people and really miss others. Whereas Hollywood makes sure it swings for almost everybody.
Therefore Hollywood misses less but rarely strikes gold. And Indie films really go for it, and are often great, but only to a select few. More people have seen Spider Man 3, then Little Miss Sunshine.
And that's a crime.
But I see how it happens.
